AERPAW: Aerial Experimentation and Research Platform on Advanced Wireless

Abstract

Aerial Experimentation and Research Platform for Advanced Wireless (AERPAW) is one of the four PAWR projects funded by the National Science Foundation in United States. AERPAW supports large-scale outdoor advanced wireless experiments with autonomous unmanned aerial and ground vehicles (UAVs/UGVs). Users of AERPAW have the opportunity to design and rapidly prototype next-generation wireless technologies, systems, and applications in both emulated and real-world environments. This talk will review the overall scope, existing infrastructure footprint and capabilities, as well as future plans for the AERPAW project. We will describe various different experimentation possibilities involving software-defined radios, a commercial Ericsson 4G/5G network, RF sensors from Keysight, and a smart agriculture system with various LoRa gateways and sensors, all of them interacting with autonomous UAVs and UGVs in a large-scale outdoor environment. We will also provide various examples of the experiments that have been conducted on the platform since AERPAW declared general availability in November, 2021.





Biography

İsmail Güvenç received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of South Florida, Tampa, FL, USA, in 2006. He was with the Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs in 2005, with DOCOMO Innovations from 2006 to 2012, and with Florida International University, Miami, FL, USA, from 2012 to 2016. From 2016 to 2020, he was an Associate Professor with North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, USA, where he has been a Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering since 2020. He has authored or coauthored more than 300 conference/journal articles and book chapters, and several standardization contributions. He has coauthored/co-edited four books and he is an inventor/co-inventor of some 30 U.S. patents. His current research interests include 5G wireless systems, communications and networking with drones, and heterogeneous wireless networks. Dr. Güvenç is a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors. He was the recipient of the USF Outstanding Dissertation Award in 2006, Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award in 2014, NSF CAREER Award in 2015, FIU College of Engineering Faculty Research Award in 2016, and NCSU ECE R. Ray Bennett Faculty Fellow Award in 2019. He was an Editor of the IEEE Communications Letters from 2010 to 2015, IEEE Wireless Communications Letters from 2011 to 2016, and a Guest Editor of several other journals. Since 2016, he has been an Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications.
